City Uzhgorod
Uzhgorod is an administrative center of Zakarpattia region (oblast), western Ukraine. Uzhgorod city is situated along the Uzh River and south of the Uzhok Pass across the Carpathians. Uzhgorod city is a highway junction.
Uzhgorod has a railway station and an international airport: Uzhgorod International Airport. Has one terminal. There are flights to Ukrainian airports and airports in Georgia, Turkey and Hungary.
The public transportation is well developed. There are buses and microbuses on about 50 routes. Uzhgorod city of Ukraine is one of the biggest industrial centers of Across-the-Carpathians area. Uzhgorod's industries include the manufacture of machine tools, furniture, veneer as well as food-processing industries.
Uzhgorod history
According to archeological data Uzhgorod was founded in 9th century. Uzhgorod was first mentioned in 903. In 10-11th centuries Uzhgorod was apart of Kievan Rus.
Uzhgorod position has long given it trading and military significance. At the end of the 11 century Uzhgorod was under Hungary's control, since the end of the 17 century - under Austria's control.
In 1919 Uzhgorod city passed to Czechoslovakia and to Hungary in 1938, back to Czechoslovakia in 1945 and to the Soviet Union in the same year.
Uzhgorod city has a university founded in 1945. Among architectural sights of Uzhgorod city of Ukraine there is a castle (11th century), a cathedral (17th century), bishop's castle (1646), Catholic Church in baroque style (1762-1767).
The tourists will certainly enjoy Uzhgorod's quite parks, embankments, the central part of the Uzhgorod, the historical and architectural monuments. These include: the Medieval castle of the 10th-16th cc. (its original appearance was restored in the 12thc., to-day it houses the Local Lore Museum and Art Gallery); the neo-Baroque Cathedral ensemble (1646, originally it was a Jesuit Monastery and later in 1773 it became a Greek-Catholic Cathedral, during the Soviet era the cathedral was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church and now it is once again a Greek-Catholic Cathedral); Goryany Rotunda (12th c., built in the shape of a hexahedron with walls 2-2,5 m thick, ornamentation dating to 1360-70 has been preserved).

The woods with diverse wildlife are the main wealth of Zakarpattia region. Here you can find the famous Narcissus Valley - the only preserve in Europe where narcissi grow in their natural condition and surroundings (on 256 hectares). The real pearl of Zakarpattia region is the mountain lake Synevyr ("The Sea Eye").
The Zakarpattia is one of the most popular Alpine skiing areas in Ukraine. There are over 360 curative water springs in the vicinity of Uzhgorod. Best Ukrainian spas, cardiological and gastroentorological health resorts are located here.
